Flywheel power

Flywheel is basically a heavy disk sitting on a shaft, which once induce in motion, requires an important amount of effort or energy to stop. This device is quite interesting when it comes to using it for generating electricity as it could be used as a storage device for any circular motion.

For example combined with a wind turbine we could use the motion of the turbine to crank up a coil spring that is attached to a flywheel. As the spring gets cranked, it will then start to induce a flywheel in motion that will be used to drive a small electric generator. With this kind of setup and knowing how important it is for wind turbine to be turning at a constant speed, if it would be subject to gusts of wind, the flywheel could used be regulated output of the wind turbine in a more linear way while storing this "extra" energy.
